RIGHT-HAND MITTEN

HAND

Change to larger size dpn and continue knitting around in stockinette with colorwork pattern:

Work following Chart A – Right, rows 1-9 (sts 1-18 are repeated 2 times per round).

Set-up for Thumb

Row 10, Chart A – Right: Continue in pattern for the first 18 sts.

Knit the next 8 sts with short strand of smooth, contrast color waste yarn. Slide the 8 sts back to left needle and knit with color 2 (so, not following charted pattern).

Finish by knitting the remaining 10 sts in charted pattern.

Continue following Chart A –  Right, rows 11-18, and then repeat rows 1-8.

Decrease Rounds to Shape Mitten Top

Work in pattern following Chart B –  Right and decrease as shown on the chart, using the following techniques:

Needle 1: Sl 1, k1, pass slipped st over. Work in pattern until 3 sts remain on needle 2: k2tog, k1.

Needle 3: Sl 1, k1, pass slipped st over. Work in pattern until 3 sts remain on needle 4: k2tog, k1.

= 4 sts decreased.

Decrease the same way on every round until 8 sts remain.

Cut yarn and draw end through remaining sts; tighten.

LEFT-HAND MITTEN

The left-hand mitten is worked as for the right-hand mitten with the following exceptions:

Work following Charts A – Left and B – Left.

Set up the thumb

Work in pattern following row 10 of Chart A – Left on the first 28 sts.

Knit the next 8 sts with a short strand of smooth, contrast color waste yarn. Slide the 8 sts back to left needle and knit with color 2 (so, not following charted pattern).

Decrease Rounds to Shape Mitten Top

Work in pattern following Chart B –  Left and decrease as shown on the chart, using the following techniques:

Needle 1: K1, sl 1, k1, pass slipped st over. Work in pattern until 2 sts remain on needle 2: k2tog.

Needle 3: K1, sl 1, k1, pass slipped st over. Work in pattern until 2 sts remain on needle 4: k2tog.

= 4 sts decreased.
